A museum and gallery centre in the south wing of the Baroque Žerotín Chateau. The permanent exhibition on the chateau's upper floor shows the chateau rooms as they looked in the 17th and 18th centuries, the origins of the town and the medieval settlement of the region, the story of the powerful Žerotín family and of the Baroque painter J. I. Sadler, who worked at the chateau. Two floors of gallery space host changing temporary exhibitions, along with lectures, workshops and guided programmes for schools. The centre opened in 2014 and is run by the Cultural Institutions of the Town of Valašské Meziříčí.
Why visit this place?
The Renaissance chateau was built for Jan IV of Pernštejn around the turn of the 1530s and 1540s.
On 22 August 1854 the state bought the chateau and converted it into a women's prison.
Allow roughly an hour and a quarter; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
There are 60 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
There is a dedicated programme for school groups, not just general admission.
