The Renaissance château of Kratochvíle was built as a summer residence for Vilém of Rožmberk in the 16th century and is a jewel of Czech Renaissance architecture. Its unique water moat, sgraffito decoration and period frescoes at the entrance gate impress visitors of all ages. The château houses an exhibition on animated film – the Museum of Animated Film.
Why visit this place?
Vilém z Rožmberka had the chateau built in 1583–1589 after the model of Italian villas, entrusting the work to the builder Baldassara Maggiho z Arogna.
The farmstead Leptáč had stood here before, built by Krčín, with whom Vilém z Rožmberka swapped the land in 1579 for the town of Sedlčany and ten villages.
