Vodní elektrárna Pastviny – historická přehrada na Divoké Orlici

The Pastviny small hydroelectric power plant is part of the dam on the Divoká Orlice river near Nekoř. The waterworks was built between 1933 and 1938 and the power plant was at the time the largest pumped-storage facility in Czechoslovakia and the first domestic plant of the so-called Swedish type, meaning the generating set has no superstructure above the machine room. It last operated in pumping mode in 1964; today it runs as a run-of-river plant with a Francis turbine rated at 3 MW and produces electricity for more than 1,500 households. The dam and the machine room are opened to the public during an open day organised by Povodí Labe together with ČEZ.
Why visit this place?
Flooding the valley meant demolishing 74 houses, shops and a school, and the whole dam cost 40 million crowns.
It was the first power plant in Czechoslovakia built without a machine hall, with the turbine set standing outdoors; it last ran in pumping mode on 9 March 1964.
Admission is free, which helps when the class budget is tight.
