The Káraný Waterworks supplies drinking water to roughly one third of Prague. The water is not drawn from a reservoir but from the Jizera River – through bank and artificial infiltration into gravel-sand alluvial deposits, it turns into groundwater practically without chemicals, some 1,000 l/s in total. It has been flowing from here to Prague since 1914. Pražské vodovody a kanalizace opens the treatment plant to public tours during the Káranský vodovodník charity sports event; the tour shows how river water becomes drinking water.

Why visit this place?

• The waterworks was designed by hydrogeologist Adolf Thiem from Leipzig and reached full output on 1 January 1914, pumping 880 litres per second from 567 wells.
• Water from the Jizera seeps naturally into the gravel beds and is collected about 250 metres from the river in a total of 685 wells.
• Admission is free, which helps when the class budget is tight.
• Allow roughly an hour and a half; the programme is aimed at upper primary and secondary students.
• There are 92 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
