The arboretum was founded in 1958 on the site of a park created between 1906 and 1928 by estate owner Quido Riedl on 1.8 hectares with some 500 woody species.
From that original park the collection has grown to 23 hectares, laid out in geographical sections called Trees of the Five Continents.
