A Gothic castle from the 13th century at the confluence of the Ostravice and Lučina rivers, today housing exhibitions dedicated to the history of the castle, traditional crafts and the mining heritage of the Ostrava region. It offers educational programmes for schools, interactive tours and a range of events for children. The castle stands in the industrial part of Ostrava, forming a striking contrast between historical architecture and the industrial landscape.
Why visit this place?
Coal mining beneath it made the castle sink by some 16 metres, and on 15 February 1954 a demolition order was even issued for it.
As early as the 13th century it was ringed by a wall 4 metres high and 2.5 metres thick.
