Skupova Plzeň is an international festival of puppet and alternative theatre held in Plzeň. It takes place every two years and offers workshops for children, performances by foreign and Czech companies, and programmes for schools. It is the oldest professional theatre festival in the Czech Republic; the traditional venue is Divadlo Alfa along with other Plzeň stages.

Why visit this place?

• Skupova Plzeň was first held in January 1967 to mark the 75th anniversary of the birth and the 10th of the death of Josef Skupa, father of Spejbl and Hurvínek.
• Until 1978 the festival was held every year; since then it has been a biennial.
• Besides the tour there are hands-on workshops, so children get to make something themselves.
• Allow roughly an hour; the programme is aimed at every age group from preschool to secondary school.
• There are 70 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
• There is a dedicated programme for school groups, not just general admission.
