The Janštejn glassworks in Horní Dubenka has been blowing glass by hand for over two hundred years. It is the largest Czech producer of hand-blown glass parts for light fixtures. Most of its production is blown for the BROKIS brand. On a guided tour, pupils get a look inside the plant, see glassmakers at the furnace and learn about glass-processing techniques; the tour ends in the BROKIS showroom with finished light fixtures. Tours are possible only with a prior reservation.

Why visit this place?

• Sklárna Janštejn is the largest producer of hand-blown glass lighting components in the Czech Republic, continuing a tradition of more than 200 years.
• Most of its output is blown for BROKIS, a maker of exclusive lighting collections; visitors see the glassworks in operation plus the showroom exhibition.
• Besides the tour there are hands-on workshops, so children get to make something themselves.
• Allow roughly an hour and a half; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
• There are 20 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
• The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
