A thirty-metre-tall iron observation tower from 2015 located within the grounds of the Slavic fortified settlement at Mikulčice (a National Cultural Monument). The viewing platform is reached via 152 steps; views extend over the Morava river floodplain, the Lower Morava lowland, and the surrounding landscape. Ideal to combine with a tour of the Great Moravian archaeological site.
Why visit this place?
The tower stands in the grounds of the Great Moravian hillfort of Mikulcice, where the foundations of nine churches and a burial ground with over 2500 graves were uncovered.
The hillfort was one of the power centres of Great Moravia; the fort itself covers about ten hectares, while the whole settlement is estimated at 30-50 hectares.
Admission is free, which helps when the class budget is tight.
Allow roughly 45 minutes; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
