The dominant 42-metre cylindrical Great Tower of one of the most beautiful medieval castles in Bohemia – Křivoklát Castle. The castle was founded in the 13th century as a hunting residence of the Přemyslid dynasty. From the castle tower there are views over the Rakovnický stream valley and the Křivoklátsko forests (Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area). Tower access is included as part of the castle tour.

Why visit this place?

• Under Emperor Rudolf II the English alchemist Edward Kelley, who promised to turn base metal into gold, was imprisoned at Křivoklát.
• The Great Tower is twelve metres across and the castle well is 42 metres deep, exactly the height of the tower itself.
• Allow roughly an hour and a half; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
• There are 35 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
• The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
• There is a dedicated programme for school groups, not just general admission.
