The Les Království dam on the Elbe river above Dvůr Králové nad Labem is a unique historic hydraulic structure from the early 20th century, incorporating a small hydroelectric power plant operated by the ČEZ Group. The dam with its neoclassical architecture is a national cultural monument. ČEZ occasionally opens the power plant to the public (Water Day, Open Door Days), when guided tours of the engine room and historic infrastructure are available.
Why visit this place?
The dam was built between 1910 and 1920 after the devastating flood of 1897; its masonry wall of Dvůr Králové sandstone is 218 metres long at the crest.
The hydroelectric plant has been running since 1923 and the whole waterworks has been a national cultural monument since 1 July 2010.
