The Polabské muzeum in Poděbrady is housed in the building of the town's oldest school. The permanent exhibition The Story of the Elbe Region leads from the Mesozoic sea through the Bronze and Roman eras to Poděbrady glassmaking and the founding of the spa; it also includes a hands-on section and a model of the mineral water bottling plant. The museum also comprises the heritage-listed medieval Kunhuta hospital dating from 1444, and two exhibition halls serve for temporary exhibitions and lectures.

Why visit this place?

• The museum has occupied the oldest school building in Podebrady since 1906; rebuilt in 1846, it also includes the medieval hospital of 1444 known as Kunhuta.
• On display are a hoard of denars from the 10th century found near Podebrady in 1936, a mammoth tusk and molar, and a fossilised dinosaur bone.
• Allow roughly an hour; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
• There are 40 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
• The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
• There is a dedicated programme for school groups, not just general admission.
