The Regional Museum in Chomutov offers permanent exhibitions on archaeology (Glimpses into Prehistory), fine art (Sculpture and Painting), and a natural history collection. The museum is housed in two buildings — the main building at Palackého 86 and the historic town hall in the city centre. It prepares guided tours, workshops, and specialised programs focused on the history and nature of the Chomutov region for schools.
Why visit this place?
The museum occupies the former Jesuit grammar school built around 1591; its prismatic Astronomers' Tower rests on the foundations of a watchtower from about 1400.
Part of the museum is the Early Gothic church of St Catherine from the 13th century, reputedly the only building in Chomutov spared by the fire of 1598.
Besides the tour there are hands-on workshops, so children get to make something themselves.
