Category: town hall building tour featuring a paternoster lift
A unique tour of the New Town Hall on Mariánské náměstí in Prague, during which visitors ride a historic paternoster lift – one of the last still in operation in the Czech Republic. The tour includes views over the rooftops of Prague and commentary on the history of Prague's city government and the building's Art Nouveau architecture.
Why visit this place?
The building went up in 1908–1911 to an Art Nouveau design by the architect Osvald Polivka and was fitted with two paternoster lifts from the start.
The facade carries Ladislav Saloun's 1910 statue of Rabbi Loew and his 1914 sculpture of the Iron Knight.
The exhibition is interactive — it expects you to touch the exhibits and try them out.
Allow roughly an hour; the programme is aimed at upper primary and secondary students.
There are 228 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
