The Museum of Ethnography of the Plzeň Region is a branch of the Museum of West Bohemia on náměstí Republiky. Between 2021 and 2023 it underwent an extensive renovation costing nearly 130 million Kč and opened two circuits of its permanent exhibition — From the Village to the Town and Livelihood, Clothing, Customs. It also houses the Centre for Experimental Ethnology, a museum shop selling products by holders of the Master of Traditional Crafts of the Plzeň Region title, and educational programmes for schools.
Why visit this place?
The museum occupies the Gerlach and Chotesov houses on Republic Square and first opened to the public on 28 September 1915.
Its first director was Ladislav Labek, who ran it for 44 years; the ethnographic sub-collection now holds over 77 thousand inventory numbers.
Besides the tour there are hands-on workshops, so children get to make something themselves.
Allow roughly an hour and a half; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
There are 70 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
