The town museum in Týn nad Vltavou occupies a Baroque archbishop’s chateau. An interactive exhibition opened in 2015 walks through the history of the Vltava valley from prehistory to the 20th century and holds over 1,000 moldavites, one of the largest such collections in Czechia. Separate sections cover timber rafting on the Vltava, the director Alfréd Radok and a World of Puppets display. The museum prepares worksheets for school groups.

Why visit this place?

• The museum was founded in 1930 by local scholars led by the teacher Bedřich Karásek, and its displays opened in 1932.
• Since the mid-1950s it has occupied the former archbishops' chateau built in 1698-1699.
• Allow roughly an hour; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
• There are 37 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
• The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
• There is a dedicated programme for school groups, not just general admission.
