The most extensive wine exhibition in the Czech Republic is housed in Mikulov Castle and comprises three sections: the Castle Cellar with a monumental historic barrel from 1643 (capacity 1,014 hectolitres — one of the largest in Europe), the Traditional Winemaking in Moravia exhibition, and a gallery of historic screw presses. The tour engagingly introduces children to the history of winemaking in the region.

Why visit this place?

• The giant wine barrel of 1643 is held together by 22 hoops weighing 390 kg each; it was ordered by Prince Maximilian of Dietrichstein.
• The neighbouring room has housed a gallery of wooden wine presses since April 2004, with nine complete presses and three torsos.
• Allow roughly an hour and a half; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
• There are 32 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
• The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
• There is a dedicated programme for school groups, not just general admission.
