The museum is housed in the building of the former Royal Mint from 1534–1536. The permanent exhibition presents the history of Jáchymov, silver mining with a working model of a mine, the minting of Jáchymov thalers (predecessor of the dollar), Renaissance culture and the personalities of Georgius Agricola and Johann Mathesius.
Why visit this place?
The mint was established in Jáchymově in 1520, when the Šlikům were granted coining rights by Ludvíkem Jagellonským; its silver coins were known as Joachimsthaler, the jáchymovský tolar.
Minting ended in 1671, and a massive smoke hood survives from the original equipment as a technical rarity of European importance.
