A six-storey nuclear fallout shelter in the grounds of the former Dukla mine near Havířov. Built between 1960 and 1962, it is now being gradually restored to its original condition by the Muzeum CO Dukla association as a Civil Defence Museum. Visitors can see the operations room, the diesel generator machine room, communications equipment and the command headquarters. Tours are available by prior arrangement only, for groups of 8 to 15 people, and visitors under 18 are admitted only when accompanied by an adult.

Why visit this place?

• Planning of the shelter began in 1954, the survey of the Dukla mine site took place in 1958 and the finished structure went into service in 1962.
• The complete equipment survives, including an operating theatre, the diesel generator room, the command staff room and communications gear.
• Admission is free, which helps when the class budget is tight.
• Allow roughly an hour and a half; the programme is aimed at secondary students.
• There are 87 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
• The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
