Category: civil defense shelter
A civil defence shelter beneath the castle ramparts in Pardubice, built in 1953. Its construction began in secret and it was not intended as a shelter for the public, but as a civil defence command post — the headquarters meant to direct events in a city threatened by radioactive fallout after a nuclear attack. Tours cover the Cold War period and are suitable for school groups as well as families.
Why visit this place?
Construction began in secret in 1953 inside the north-eastern rondel of the castle ramparts; residents of house no. 4 were moved out.
It was not a shelter for townspeople but a civil defence command post; its filtration could serve about 120 people for a short time.
Allow roughly an hour and a quarter; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
There are 86 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.
There is a dedicated programme for school groups, not just general admission.
