The monastery was founded in 1144 by Duke Vladislav II and his wife Gertrude; the Baroque complex was shaped by Mathey, Santini and Dientzenhofer.
The convent rests on unique oak foundations preserved below the water table of the Střela river floodplain. In the 19th century the monastery became the residence of Austrian chancellor Metternich.
