Šipka Cave on Kotouč hill (440 m a.s.l.) is the most famous karst formation of the Štramberk karst and a world-renowned site of prehistoric finds. In 1880, teacher Karel Jaroslav Maška discovered the lower jaw of a Neanderthal child here (the so-called Šipka jaw, approx. 40,000 years old) – one of the oldest finds of this type in Europe. Research confirmed that the cave was inhabited by Neanderthals, mammoth hunters and reindeer hunters. Bones of over 130 species of prehistoric animals were found here. The cave has a large entrance antechamber and a stalactite passage; freely accessible via the Lašská nature trail from Štramberk (approx. 1 km from the town square). Note: from late September 2024 to April 2025 it was closed due to shifting rock blocks – please verify current accessibility before visiting. Exhibits from the cave can be seen at Muzeum Šipka Štramberk (Záuličí 456).
