Category: observatory and astronomical observation
The Josef Sienel Observatory stands on a hill in the Lošov district of Olomouc. It is run by the volunteer association Spolek Hvězdárna Olomouc, and public observing sessions take place every Friday after dark, but only in clear skies. A Celestron NexStar 8 GPS telescope is used to observe the Moon, planets, double stars, star clusters and nebulae, or an astronomy-themed programme is screened. Admission is voluntary; groups of more than ten people need to book in advance.
Why visit this place?
The Lošov observatory was ceremonially opened on 14 July 1957; it was initiated by headmaster Josef Sienel, whose name it has carried since 2007.
Observing is done mainly with a Celestron NexStar 8 GPS telescope, and the observatory grew out of an astronomy club founded in 1951.
The exhibition is interactive — it expects you to touch the exhibits and try them out.
Allow roughly an hour; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
