The František Pešta Observatory in Sezimovo Ústí near Tábor has been in operation since 1965. Alongside public observing sessions, it conducts research into solar activity, sending its results to Brussels and other astronomical institutes. Since 2018 it has been building a historical library and archive of astronomy. It hosts lectures, courses and exhibitions.
Why visit this place?
The observatory was pushed through by the amateur astronomer František Pešta, who could not afford to study astronomy; it opened in June 1965, the year he turned sixty.
For over two years Pešta gathered material on the meteor shower that fell near Strkov and Planá nad Lužnicí on 3 July 1753, publishing his findings in the National Museum journal.
The exhibition is interactive — it expects you to touch the exhibits and try them out.
Allow roughly an hour and a half; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
There are 31 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
An outdoor trip that, according to our records, runs all year round.
