Gothic castle from the first half of the 14th century rising on a prominent basalt hill above the Elbe lowlands near Pardubice. One of the most significant medieval fortifications in eastern Bohemia – a dominant stronghold of the lords of Kunštát and later the Jagiellons. Offers guided tours of the interiors, a Romanesque palace, a castle tower with views over the entire Elbe lowlands and the Orlické Mountains. Administered by the National Heritage Institute.
Why visit this place?
Today's castle was founded in 1421 by the Hussite captain Diviš Bořek z Miletínka, who in 1434 led the victorious lords' league at the Battle of Lipany.
In 1645 the Swedish general Torstenson took the castle easily; the ruined seat was never restored and in the 19th century stone quarrying damaged part of it.
