A museum of firefighting equipment housed in a restored 18th-century farm building. It was created by the volunteer firefighters of Chrastava themselves and ranks among the largest exhibitions of its kind in the Czech Republic. On display are over 60 large exhibits – horse-drawn hand and motor pumps, a fire cannon used to sound the alarm in the days before sirens, an all-wooden hand pump from 1778 and hundreds of other items.

Why visit this place?

• The idea was born in summer 1988 at the 120th anniversary of the local fire brigade; the volunteers opened the museum on 21 June 1997.
• One exhibit is a fire helmet donated by the rescuer Thomas Coleman from New York, who took part in the World Trade Center rescue on 11 September 2001.
• The exhibition is interactive — it expects you to touch the exhibits and try them out.
• Allow roughly an hour; the programme is aimed at lower primary, upper primary and secondary students.
• There are 77 more tips within 25 km, enough to build a full-day trip.
• The whole programme is indoors, so rain is not a problem.

A tour of the largest collection of historical firefighting equipment in the Czech Republic from the 18th–20th centuries. Students will see a working alarm cannon and a fire engine from 1778.
