The Neo-Renaissance building by architect Josef Zítek offers backstage tours for organized groups of 11 to 60 people. The tour lasts 50 minutes and takes visitors through the most famous spaces of the theatre, including the auditorium, foyer, and terrace with a view of Petřín. Themed tours focused on stage technology (Secrets of the Backstage) are available, as well as multilingual tours in Czech, English, German, and French.

The theatre was paid for by a public collection under the slogan "The Nation to Itself". An estimated 100,000–150,000 people came to the laying of the foundation stones on 16 May 1868.
Two months after it opened, on 12 August 1881, the building burned down. A new collection raised a million gulden in 47 days and the theatre reopened on 18 November 1883 with Smetana's Libuše.
